Chinese New Year may be a time for celebration, but it comes with many so-called rules which have become a tradition and are still practiced even today. There are many dos and don’ts that you need to be aware of. Below you’ll find the list of do’s and don’ts: -
Dos
Keep Your House Windows Open
Do leave your windows wide open as this will enable the breeze to circulate around the house as well as to bring in the luck together with the breeze.
Dress in Red
If you ever notice, ornaments and decorations used during Chinese New Year are usually in red as the Chinese believe that red things bring them luck and wealth. Hence, people tend to wear in red in order to reflect the auspiciousness. So, do dress your house in red, and yourself too!
Eat Sweets, Candies and Cookies
Do eat the sweets, candies and cookies served in every house you visit as it will ensure you a sweeter year ahead. Of course, do eat in moderation.
Don’ts
Sweep and Clean during Chinese New Year
Sweeping floors and cleaning the house during Chinese New Year is a big “No-no”. It is said that when you sweep or clean, you tend to sweep away all your luck.
Wash Your Hair
Washing hair on the first day of Chinese New Year is also prohibited as if you do, you tend to wash away your luck as well.
Owe Anyone Money
There is a belief if you owe anyone money, it is best to repay everything before the New Year. It is said that if you don’t pay your debt, it will continue to accumulate and it will be the same in the coming years.
Talk about Ghosts or Death
During the daily conversation on Chinese New Year, it is best to avoid any conversation about ghosts and death as these are inauspicious. Also, avoid mentioning the word "four" as it means death in Chinese.
